What do I need to study to compose music?

I’ve been playing electric bass for almost 5 years.
I mainly studied modern theory, like 20th century jazz harmony.
I bought a book on classical Harmony (Piston), but I felt it was jsut rules and rules which I would break in any case.
What things should I study? like counterpoint, visualizing scores?
Lately I’m practising chords on an acoustic guitar and I’ve also bought myself an electric piano
I love Progressive Rock like Yes, Camel, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Zappa… here’s an idea of the style I’m going for:
