My bass guitar sounds ‘dull’. Help?

I have a fender precision bass copy that has had a very rough life from stage 1. Since i took it apart and redid the wiring and checked everthing it has lost the edge of the sound. It now sound like a synth bass rather than a bass guitar. Any ideas to help bring the sound back. It has had new strings recently and it seems the pickups are very recessed into the body compared with other bass’

Raise the pick-ups to about an 1/8th inch from the strings. That will brighten the sound considerably. Also check to make sure your tone knob is working properly.
