Spruce top vs. Cedar top acoustic guitars?

I am finally thinking about buying an acoustic guitar after playing electric for 4 years. I’ve been looking at some and realized there’s a significant difference in tone between Cedar and Spruce.

I’d like to know the differences, the advantages, and disadvantages of owning each. I’d be using it for mostly blues and folk. Sometimes with a slide. Also, if anyone can recommend a good acoustic between $150-$350 I’d greatly appreciate it. I’ve been looking at the seagull s6 entourage which is highly reviewed and it only costs $299.

Help?

Spruce produces a brighter tone while cedar produces a warmer tone. Spruce is also a significantly harder wood than cedar which is why a cedar top will get nicks and dents much faster than spruce. It is entirely a matter of taste; some people (like me) appreciate the brightness of spruce and others, the warmness of cedar. You should try both and make up your own mind.

There are plenty of custom builders – Jim Goodall and James Olson come to mind – that make lots of cedar topped guitars. Olsen’s James Taylor model comes with a cedar top.

While I have a great deal of respect for Seagull guitars as well as the other brands produced by LaSiDo of Canada, I feel that cedar on a dreadnought is a terrible combination. Dreads are bass-heavy in general which is why most of them come with spruce tops to offset that with some brightness. A cedar-topped dread is something you better make sure you like before you buy, but I find that they lack the high range. Good luck.
