FENDER BASS GUITAR FORUM
Why do I have to raise my strings so high on my bass guitar?

I have a Mexican Fender P Bass and I have to raise my strings higher compared to my Kramer Forum bass to make it not rattle or buzz. Why is this? It makes my Fender a little more difficult to play. Is it because the gauges of the strings? I have heavy gauge strings on the Fender, and Medium on my Kramer.
Please use easy words and sentences as I am not a very good guitar tech and don’t know the words to many things of the guitar/bass.
Im raising the strings from the bridge.

Your guitar may need a setup. Im going to guess that your neck is bending backwards a little and causing fret buzz and you are compensating that by raising the action at the bridge. Your guitar probably needs its truss rod adjusted. When the neck is at the proper angle, your action (string height) will most likely be able to be lowered. Since you started messing with the saddles at the bridge, your guitar probably also needs the intonation adjusted as well. At this point, you should take it in to the shop for a setup. It shouldn’t need any parts, just a few twists and turns. Its better if you let a tech do it so it gets done correctly.
Also, heavier guage strings will make you have to raise the action a bit, as well as possibly not fitting right in the nut and adding more stress to the neck.
