LEARN BASIC BASS GUITAR CHORDS

How to avoid bad bass guitar habits?
alright basically im learning bass and iv glanced round the internet and yahoo answers but cant find my answer.
i know every musician grows in his/her own ways and adapts their style of playing to their instrument.
but obviously there is a certain amount of MUSTS that every bass player (in my case) follows.
so just one or two basic questions
1) where should my plucking hand rest?
2) is there an ideal way to use your fingers to play on the frets? (IE making chords or just go at a random pattern)
3) what are some good warmups? im guessing just some scales
4)sometimes when i pluck a note i tend to allow the string to hit off the board is this alright, or should i only do that when playing something heavy like Around The World by RHCP (of course i wont be able to play that song for a while but thats just an example)
thanks for the answers in advance
1. It shouldn’t really rest… (kidding) Anywhere. Up in the air is my favorite while playing an extended note, and if I want my strings silenced between notes, I’ll rest it on the strings.
2. Economy of motion. Keep your hand where it’s best positioned for the part coming up. Sometimes that means chord shapes, sometimes it’s a random pattern, sometimes it’s just flat, muting strings.
3. I never warm up. Sorry, I’ve been playing too long, and I’m sure I’ve got “bad habits” of my own that are a part of my style. Scales, rhythms, for me it changes day by day.
4. Hitting the fretboard is fine. What you have to look out for is hitting the pickups, because that makes a terrible sound. Which can be manipulated into being a beautiful sound if you know what you’re doing. For example, at the end of Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) by Cliff the Great, that sound is made by tapping the string onto the pickup with distortion. Usually it’s not a pleasant sound, though.
