GUITAR STRINGS WIKI

How much guitar string slack?
How much are you supposed to leave?
I have changed my strings twice now on my Jackson (with a Floyd rose tremelo). When I have finished both times I will tune all the way up to standard tuning and the strings will be pulling my bridge like no tomarrow. I cant even push the whammy bar down.
I dont know if this is because I left too much slack or not enough. Most tutorials touch very lightly on the topic of string slack which to me seems like the most important part in restringing a guitar.
(if you do not understand my problem by my description then here is a picture

By the time I am tuned up my bridge looks like number 2.
So how much should I leave and is there a way to measure it like inches past the tuning peg or something?

my problem looks like number 2 and I’m not even touching the whammy bar.
(for some reason the link in the question wasnt working)
Here is what you need to do. tune the guitar to pitch and then, loosen each string about 2 full turn each.
Now, remove the back plate and tighten the 2 screws that are hold ing the strings. Don’t worry about breaking anything. Screw the screws about 3 full turns each.
Now retune your guitar and you will see the trem went down slightly. Again, loosen the strings 2 or 3 full turn and repeat screwing another 3 full turn, the screws holding the strings.
Now, you should see a big difference. Now from this point, jutst turn 1 full turn instead of 3 for the trem block. The reson is because you are close to having it set perfectly. All you need is 1/8″ clearance in the back of the bridge. That is enough to operate the whammy upwards and downwards.
That is how you adjust and don’t put springs. It will stiffen the action of the whammy bar. You should have 3 springs holding the block.
