First off…you don’t HAVE to have a teacher. You could very easily teach yourself, and save yourself some money in the process. If you truly do know nothing about guitars, you could buy a primer book with basic chords and the essentials of cleaning/taking care of your guitar along with stringing it, tuning it, etc.
If you’re on a budget, you can check at local guitar/music centers. Usually they have decent selections of off-brand guitars that play decently enough for a beginner. Also, musiciansfriend.com and other like sites have some great bargains if you know what you’re looking for.
If you’re not on a budget, then the sky’s the limit. Some of the classic guitar/amp combos are : Gibsons w/ Marshall amps, and Fenders w/ Fender or Vox amps.
Strats (Fender stratocasters) are great all around guitars. You can get a decent used one for $200-300. However, Gibson Les Pauls are probably what you’d like to check out. They’re used for heavier music. But they are also much pricier. Also check out Ibanez guitars. Decent sound, but lacks the versatility I personally need. My personal favorite guitar for those on a budget are PRS guitars (Paul Reed Smith). They are much better all around guitars than Ibanez, and have much higher quality for about the same price.
Don’t worry: I’m only 16…and I taught myself to play. You can definitely do it.
