GUITAR PLAYER FORUM
the guitar vs. the violin?

hahhah i came across a lot of forums with heated arguments explaining why people thought either instrument was harder and the players superior to the others, and i was just wondering what you think?
please state your reasons for picking which instrument as well

I play both instruments.
As with any instrument, how “hard” it is depends on what kind of material you’re playing.
I do think it is easier to sound good on the guitar, because once you learn three simple chords, there are many many many popular songs you can play.
However, with the violin, in the beginning stages you will only be playing one note at a time, so there’s less to focus on (as opposed to the guitar where you’re playing up to 6 notes at once).
Both instruments cause callouses on the fingertips. Violin has been known to cause chronic back pain – I haven’t heard anything similar about the guitar.
Also, typically, the guitar is perceived as being “cooler.”
