GUITAR OUTPUT JACK DIAGRAM
Guitar electronics quit working?

The other day I bought a used Memphis electric guitar at a pawn shop. Its a copy of a Fender MIM Strat. Everything worked when i bought it. on my way home i stopped at guitar center and bought a new pick guard and new nobs for it. When i got home i immediately changed out the pick guard and nobs, swapping all the electronics to the new pick guard. As soon as i was done I plugged it in, nothing. The electronics weren’t working. I know for sure because i plugged my Gibson in and it worked just fine, so its not the amp or the cable. I took it apart and discovered a cable had come disconnected so I soldered it back, but still nothing. Then i went to a local music store who said my output jack was wired backwards, i tried changing the wiring, but again nothing. I have looked up wiring diagrams and as far as i can tell I have everything wired correctly. So now I am at a loss, someone please help me. If you need additional info please let me know.

Hello, Garrett! The electronics in a standard Stratocaster-style guitar are very basic, so most likely you just are not completing the circuit. Check to make sure that the signal ground (sleeve of the output jack) and hot wire (tip connection) has continuity throughout the entire circuit. Inspect each wire connection with a light, just to make sure a solder connection is not loose or cracked. If you have a multi-meter or equivalent testing device, check each independent wire for continuity from point-to-point; otherwise, look closely for any signs of distress to the wiring. Place the pickguard assembly into the guitar, but do not reassemble just yet; connect the output jack to an amplifier to test for sound, prior to final assembly (installing pickguard screws and strings). With the control knobs rotated fully clockwise, gently tap each pickup on the poles, listening for amplified sound in each of the pickup selector switch positions. Going through these steps, the problem should become readily apparent. Let me know if I can help further. Best regards, Dana
