Gluing a guitar body?
I’m making an electric guitar (neck through), but I can’t find any alder, basswood, etc. for sale in the thickness of 1 3/4″.
Will it comprimise the guitar quality if I laminate two peices (1 at 1″ thick and another at 3/4″ thick) of wood to form the correct thickness, and then cut the wings out of the glued peice?
I’d rather not buy the wood on eBay.
Is this kind of gluing a taboo, or should it be okay?

Yes, you can laminate 2 pieces for thickness as long as you clamp it securely… don’t just clamp along the edges and expect the center to be OK… it won’t.
It isn’t taboo at all, the lamination just takes much longer than a thick piece and there is more chance of screwing up.

The above sources are known for their instrument grade woods, but there are multitudes of suppliers that can provide you with 8/4 stock at a much lower price. You are probably aware that 8/4 is the name for 2″ thick lumber before it is surfaced… usually 1 3/4″ when complete.
When you cut out the wings, make sure to cut them slightly oversize and KEEP THE SCRAP so you can use it as a clamping caul to avoid the wings and neck from sliding around.
This is beyond the scope of your question, but if you partially drive 2 or 3 small nails or brads into the glue edge of the wings and then cut the heads off about 1/16″ above the surface to make a point, when you force the wings onto the neck they won’t slide around. Just be careful when you apply the glue to the wings so you don’t jab yourself… always apply glue to the WINGS, not the NECK.
I also suggest that you make sure that the wings are flush with the top of the body part of the neck when you glue it, then remove any thickness variation from the back of the guitar.
