BOSS GUITAR EFFECTS PEDAL

BOSS GUITAR EFFECTS PEDAL
Guitar effects pedal and amp question..?

i currently have a Washburn WI26 Idol guitar, a Boss OD-20, and Line6 Spider III 15 watt amp. i only started playing electric like less than 5 months ago. i’m also planing to buy a Boss DD-7 and a Vox Time Machine delay pedal. but i’m only gonna buy one of those this year, still choosing which one i should buy first. anyway, to my main question. i’m planning that maybe some time next year i’ll get a real OD pedal. and i’m looking to buy a Fulltone Fulldrive2 and a Fulltone OCD (but i think il buy the Fulldrive2 first). now my question is, will the Fulldrive2 sound good on my Line6 Spier III 15 watt amp? i read forums and they all say that the Fulltone Fulldrive2 and OCD don’t go well with solid state amps. so yea, what do you guys think? a couple of my friends have actually tried playing distortion and overdrive pedals into my amp and it sounded pretty good to me.. but i’d love to read your thoughts and ideas on this.

Here’s the thing – pretty much everything tends to sound better going into a tube amp, so its a little unfair to say that those particular pedals “don’t go well” with solid state. Compared to tubes, the case could be made that *nothing* really does!

Quite honestly, if you want a better sound, get a bigger amp – specifically, something with one or more 12″ speakers. An 8″ speaker simply will not do your pedals justice. More speaker = better articulation, more watts = better headroom, which will overall mean a more detailed, better quality sound…. even if it is coming from a line 6 spider 3 amp.

Always take what you hear with a fair pinch of salt – everyone has their own opinions, and a fair number of them are based on outrageous biases or gross misinformation (on the contrary, I am a pure font of unsullied wisdom and knowledge, of course).

All I’m saying is that it’s important to listen with your own ears first before you listen with someone else’s, if you catch my drift.

I’ve heard that the Fulltone’s are some great pedals… but my personal opinion is that you’ll get the best results if you end up putting them through a better amp, something that isn’t based on digital modeling technology.

Although I haven’t heard it yet, the Crate V5 is a cheap tube amp. Might be worth looking into. I bought myself an Epiphone Valve Jr head/combo combination a little while ago, and I’m pretty happy with it… it’s a nice sounding little unit. A lot of the time I’ll grab my Crate Power Block (a glorified compact power amp) and hook it up into the EVJr’s extension cab, add a wah pedal and a Boss Metalcore, and I get some great tone in a very small package. I play it at lunch all the time… I love working in a warehouse…

PS – I am biased against Line 6. I’ve owned a few versions of the Pod’s, played with some of the various Spiders, etc. Not a fan of Line 6 – I think the tone tends to be flat, lacking in dynamic range, the distortion tends to sound like various degrees of hissy fuzz, the onboard fx are sub-par, etc. The fact that the Spiders I’ve tried don’t have fx loops… seriously? Wtf? That killed it for me, finally.
