BASS GUITAR STRINGS NAMES
If you can make a bad bass/lead guitar sound good, will you be really good on a guitar?
I have a beginner’s bass, a Squier Jazz Bass I got in a starter pack, and I’m getting pretty good. If I upgrade to a real quality bass, will I be even better?
Also, my bass strings are way off the fretboard, because I haven’t tightened the thing up at the head, I don’t know the name of it…will I be even better if I tighten that? I think its made it to where I press on the strings harder than needed

First, that thing at the head that you tightened is the truss-rod, and you can very easily break your bass if you tighten it too much. The truss-rod is usually moved in VERY small measurements, and it should always be done by a guitar/bass professional.
I would actually take it to a shop to make sure you haven’t broken the thing, but if you are going to get better equipment, here is your answer.
Nice equipment will sound better, and it may be easier to play if the strings are closer to the fretboard, but it doesn’t really make you a better player.
If you watch your heroes, you will notice that they can pick up a complete piece of garbage guitar or bass and sound just as good as they do on their expensive equipment, because their technique is good.
Sure, having good equipment helps and the sound will be better, but it will not make you play better.
Oops…I now see that you did NOT tighten the truss-rod, good…do not do this yourself, sorry I read that wrong.
My suggestion, get the better bass if you want it, because if you are playing on equipment that you love, you will play more, and that is how you get better.
