BASS GUITAR NUTS
I have a rattle on one of my bass guitar strings……how do I cure it?
This much I know;
1) It’s not rattling against the frets.
2) It’s not rattling on the nut as it rattles when the string is fretted.
3) It is only on the D (2nd) string.
4) If I fret above the 12th fret, the rattle goes away.
5) There are no obvious loose bits of string winding (they appear to be new strings supplied with the bass).
6) I don’t think it’s rattling at the bridge end as if I press hard on the string, mimicing a new bridge, it seems to still have the rattle albeit with a duller sound.
Can you help?
It sounds like you have a raised fret. It could be fixed by adjusting the neck. Take it to a luthier or guitar repairer who can make a slight adjustment for you.
Do not attempt to do it yourself unless you know what you are doing.
