BASS GUITAR MUSIC THEORY LESSONS
I’m 18 and I want to learn the bass guitar, whats the best way to go about doing that?
I’m 18 and I’m interested in learning the bass guitar. I took about 6 years of piano but I quit about 4 years ago and I haven’t played it since. Although, I took 6 years of piano I was taught no music theory and I feel I am basically musically inexperienced. I want to learn the bass guitar but I don’t want to take lessons. Would it be possible for me to learn from just books and DVDs? Any suggestions on titles? I feel I need something very detailed and specific. Also, I am not the most coordinated person in the world. Is this a bad idea?
I just started myself, only I’m 14 and I take lessons, but for about 2 weeks I taught myself.
1.) Get a book that teaches you tabs, and has examples on a c.d that you can play along with
2.) Stay with that book until you have learned every single technique in it.
3.) Practice everyday
4.) If you have a friend that plays bass or guitar, ask them to help you with the basics.
5.) Set goals and work towards them continuously
6.) After 6 months or so, see if your friends want to start a band, this will keep you on track.
7.) DO not start playing random songs that you like if you do not know the techniques
8.) My book, that is very helpful but sometimes unclear is Progressive Rock Bass by Stephen Richter
9.) Get a tuner, however cheap
10.) do not buy an expensive bass at the moment, get a cheap one, you never known if you’ll stay with it.
11.)Make sure to ask questions about bass when you buy/rent your bass
12.) Memorize scales and notes and their locations on the neck of the bass
13.) START EASY!
14.) Make sure to get an amp!
15.) Research bass on-line.
16.) Lessons are the best bet, because your instuctor knows how the piece is supposed to sound.
