BASS GUITAR JAZZ BOOKS

I want to learn electric bass guitar but I dont really know anything. Any & all advice appreciated?
I really would like to learn bass guitar and I have a million questions:
*how hard is it to learn? is there a place online / book I can buy / dvd set or anything to help me?
*what kind of bass should I get? I want to play rock music. I did some research and someone recommended this: http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/… it says its a jazz bass – does that affect anything?
i would rather not spend more than $400 max if possible.
please dont laugh at me, I know I probably sound really stupid =P thanks so much for help!
You could buy a really nice beginner bass for $400. Maybe you should not start with such a high dollar beginner. The jazz bass that you refer to is probably a Fender jazz bass. It is a really nice bass mostly used by more experienced bass players. And they are heavy. You should shop around and find a guitar that gives you the right feel. Some bass guitars have smaller bodies and are lighter than others. There are 5-string and 4-string guitars and are a matter of preference and also a matter of how low do you want to go. I have a 5-string Jay Tursor that has a body comparable to a 6-string guitar. I really like it. However, I would be just as satisfied with a 4-string. The Tursor is my 1st 5-string and I’ve had it for 8 years. I am primarily an R&B player and do some Reggae gigs. The 5-string works fine for Reggae but during the R&B gigs I don’t routinely use the 5th string. If you plan on playing a 5-string then that’s what you should begin with. Bass guitar is simple to learn and play. First you should learn where the notes are. learn the open notes first. 4-string EADG, actually the fat string is considered your bottom string. Next learn your 3 chord progressions. G-C-D. A-D-E. F-B flat-C. etc. The 3 chord progression is the building block for almost any song you care to play. After you learn your progressions then it’s time to venture outward to other notes within that scale. For example; R&B bass is built on walking bass. R&R is built upon R&B bass. C&W is even easier but some of the bass structure is very similar to R&B bass. They’re all related. Some Reggae bass and Jazz bass begins to get a little more complex. Your best bet is to find a tutor rather than DVD’s or books. Although the lead guitar players get all the attention typically. They wouldn’t sound worth a wood nickle without your foundation to pad all that screeching and most times unnecessary dirt. Sure, a good lead will get the crowd all wound up but the bass is something they can hear and feel. There’s nothing like a group of tight musicians that know how to hit that groove and make some fine ear candy. Just go for it.
