I need help playing the guitar?

I have just bought a guitar and thought i could easily play it without any lessons. So i sought help online and tried to practice a few basic chords but the problem is that usually one of my fingers mutes one or the other strings which makes the note sound horrible when i strum it. I am a total beginner help please.

you just have to be careful not to touch the other strings – and its something that you get by practicing..

it would be worth getting a book – Also there is a ‘correct’ way to hold the fretboard –

I did a quick google search to find a pic – this site has the correct and incorrect way to hold the neck of the guitar if you scroll down..

however – Ive been playing for about 10 years and I hold it the incorrect way..
