BASIC GUITAR NOTES CHART

how to read bass notes?
ok.. so ive had my bass guitar for a while now and really want to jump into learning it (i already play guitar) and since the bassist for our school’s praise band is leaving i’d like to try out for his place and noticed tht all he reads is basic guitar chords when playing the bass. can anyone tell me how (this will sound weird) to read guitar chords when playing bass? i mean i know how to play chords on my guitar but idk how to on the bass… do you just read off of a bass note chart & transfer it to the chords? wow this is confusing!!! help??
You read the chord symbol over the top, so we’ll pretend it says G. So a G chord will have G B D.
Bass is more of a walking instrument, it’s really too deep to play chords on, you can do it but they get too thick and “muddy” so, you walk them.
If the chord symbol says G, you can do one of three things:
1. Play just the G. Either holding it for the whole bar, or, tapping out a rhythm (It’s called playing monotonically=mono=one, tonic=sound, so, you just keep playing the one sound over and over (Try listening to the rhythm everyone else is playing and “Tap” along with them-you’ll get the idea)
2. Use the notes from the chord (This is called an arpeggio), just play G, then B, then D and again, tap them out on the rhythm to the song. They dont have to be in any set order. Theres no rule for “play this first an that next” Any note from the G chord will sound okay and fit what you’re doing.
3. Use ANY note from the G scale= G A B C D E F# and “walk” around but only on those notes.
(Something to note here: If youre in the key of C and you’re scaling through a G, you’d add the F# BUT if you don’t think it sounds right, then you can use the F from the key you’re in, Fnatural. Listen and decide which sounds best.) Again, listen to the rhythm being played and fit what you’re doing to it.
THEN: Mix the variations up. sometimes, hold the note through the whole bar, sometimes play the single note tapping the rhythm through the bar, sometimes walk the chord and sometimes walk the scale(Scale walks are usual for jazz music, most rock songs walk the chord,)
Get all that?
Works for every chord.
All the best
